Recently, Medicare Administrative Contractors (MACs) notified certain hospitals of potentially aberrant data on their Worksheet S-10 for cost reporting periods beginning in federal fiscal year 2017 (i.e., October 1, 2016, through September 30, 2017). The letter requests providers review their reported data, specifically Line 20, Column 2 – Charity Care Charges for Insured Patients. It is imperative to correctly segregate amounts by insured and uninsured following the cost report instructions to accurately calculate the cost of charity care.
Providers who received the notification must email their completed “Worksheet S-10 Revision Response Document” to the MAC no later than April 26, 2019, to advise whether or not revisions are necessary.
If the MAC is notified by the above deadline that revisions are necessary, the hospital has until May 10, 2019, to provide updated Worksheet S-10 amounts on the template provided. The template only allows revisions to Lines 20, 22, 24, 25, and 26.
If requested on or before May 10, 2019, a one-time extension until May 24, 2019, will be granted to submit revisions.
If your hospital has not received notification from the MAC, you may not request S-10 data revisions at this time. CMS will only accept revisions from hospitals identified as having potentially aberrant data.
