On Oct. 21, 2015, Draffin & Tucker partner Jim Creamer, CPA, CFE, presented “A Thin Line – Keeping Your Moral Compass in Check” to the South Georgia Medical Managers Group. His presentation focused on the public’s perception of professionals within healthcare, CPAs and the business world.
The healthcare industry is particularly susceptible to risk of fraud and ethics violations. With a substantial increase in the number of Medicare and Medicaid audits, in conjunction with the implementation of ICD-10, it is vital that managers are aware of what are ethical practices. During his presentation, Jim provided insight into the rules that guide professionals in the performance of their duties and gave real life examples of fraud and ethical violations within the healthcare community. He said that the primary causes of fraud cases are lack of internal controls, lack of management review override of internal controls and poor tone at the top.
