The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is required to collect data every three years on the occupational mix of employees for each short-term, acute care hospital that is subject to the inpatient prospective payment system, in order to construct an occupational mix adjustment to the wage index.

This survey includes data for pay periods ending between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2019. The occupational mix adjustment calculated from this survey will be applied to the federal fiscal years 2022 through 2024 wage indexes.
The deadline to submit the completed Excel version of Form CMS-10079 (2019) to Medicare Administrative Contractors, via email or overnight delivery, is July 1, 2020. However, CMS is granting an automatic extension until August 3, 2020, for hospitals nationwide that may be unable to meet the July 1 deadline amidst the Novel Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19) national emergency.
